What is So Special about Wu Yi Tea?
Tea has many benefits. Real tea is derived from Camellia sinensis. Oolong (also called wu yi), green, black and white teas are all leaves from this plant, but they are processed differently rendering the various teas.
You may run across some products that are called tea, but they are not true tea from the Camellia sinensis plant. Tea concoctions or energy drinks are often sugary beverages flavored like tea with artificial flavor. Herbal teas, on the other hand, are not from the Camellia Sinensis plant unless they have been blended, but they are usually healthy because they too contain beneficial nutrients.
The phytochemicals in real tea are what make them so beneficial to health and potentially, weight loss. Phytochemicals are contained in all plants. They protect the plant from free radical damage at the cellular level as well as from disease. When you consume plants, as long as they are not overly processed (refined grains), you receive these benefits.
Phytochemicals improve health at all levels because they work at the very basic cellular level. When we are exposed to free radicals (environmental pollutants, carcinogens, UV rays, food etc.), they damage our cells via a process called oxidation. Free radicals have an extra electron (negative charge), so they seek out another electron to make them neutral.
This process is called oxidation and it results in another free radical being produced. A chain reaction takes place throughout the body as more and more free radicals are made. As this takes place, cells are damaged or mutated and eventually, tissue health is compromised. Ultimately, the effect is that our bodily systems do not work as well and health deteriorates.
When this occurs, you may experience frequent illnesses, premature aging and the beginnings of various disease processes.
So, back to wu yi tea. All tea contains phytochemicals which are capable of counteracting the ill effects of free radicals. They are also showing promising results in the weight loss industry. For one, tea is a zero calorie beverage (so long as you don’t add anything to it), and this can be very powerful by replacing high-calorie beverages such as soda. Even diet soda has been implicated in obesity due to its ability to increase your cravings for sweets.
Tea also has another benefit, though. It increases your metabolism and burns fat. In lab studies, green tea extract has proven to counteract diet-induced obesity. The effects were magnified when exercise was included. Tea helps the body burn fat for a longer time after exercise is complete.
Wu yi tea and green tea contain more phytochemicals than black tea because they are not fermented as long. Green tea, however, has a somewhat earthy taste whereas wu yi has a flavor more akin to black tea. For this reason, you may be more apt to drink wu yi tea. White tea has very delicate flavor, but it may not be as powerful as green or wu yi tea in the fat burning arena.
Though diet and exercise are important, simply drinking a few mugs of wu yi tea per day may boost your weight loss efforts.
